Tien Nguyen, SCRIPPS Spelling Bee Qualifier

ECM T.Ngu SCRIPPsEinstein Charter Middle School student Tien Nguyen won the 29th Annual New Orleans Spelling Bee Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Xavier University. This is the second time she has won the regional tournament in three years.Tien was awarded an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee at the end of May. This year is especially special for her because her parents will able to make the trip to support her – something they missed out on in 2015 when she qualified.Tien is an eighth grade student at Einstein Charter Middle and credits her sister for helping her prepare for the Bee.“She and I started practicing about two months ago so I would be ready,” said Tien. “My English teacher Ms. (Trace) Ragland was also a big aid in getting prepared.”Her winning word in Saturday’s bee was “duende” which in one definition means to have a passion or quality of spirit; something Einstein believes will push Tien to victory in May.
